Portage Camping

Eric & I went camping down in Portage on Wednesday. We had a gorgeous day. Since we were given 2 coupons for the Portage Glacier cruise we went ahead and caught the last boat. The glacier even calved TWICE while we were there - pretty great to see! That evening after a grilled dinner we went for a short walk (ok 3 miles or so) to geocache in the area. As I was up to my ears in willow bushes I became concerned about bears and Eric noticed a pile of bear scat (sure glad I taught him what it looked like!). So, we quickly (very quickly) left the area as there had been reports of an "aggressive" bear in the area - though I doubt it would have been the same one.

We woke up the next morning to cloudy skies which quickly opened up to a downpour. As it was raining we drove through the Animal Conservation Center - the animals were out, but not as much fun as when the sun is shining. For lunch, we drove to Whittier and took time to drive around the town a bit. After returning to camp we took an afternoon nap hoping the rain would be gone by the time we woke up - no luck. About 9:30pm we took down camp in the rain and headed home. Out of curiosity we drove around counting the other tent campers and there was only one other:-)

Today was a cloudy but WARM day in Anchorage. I finished the quilt I have been working on -yeah me:) No point in watching any fireworks because it is still daylight all night for the most part. All I hear are the sounds of firecrackers (at least that is what I hope it is - hehe).

Only 3 days until I fly to the Lower 48! I am sure I will be in for a surprise with the heat - but I am ready for some warm weather!!

Still Keeping Busy

It is so nice not having classes for the first time ever in the summer! Last night I made the top of a baby quilt for a friend - I think I can finish it tonite. Today I found the perfect backing for the quilt - Nursery Rhymes:) The second picture is a sample of a fruit thing I am making for a friends bridal shower. It was easy to throw together and I think it looks ok:)
Off to quilt some more!

Returned from a fabulous staff working retreat to Homer. Actually it was in Halibut Cove - a beautiful location. The entire time I was thinking how it is time to relocate back to SE Alaska or maybe even just Homer:) We didn't see much wildlife though we were cautioned about black bears being on the island so we were careful to not leave food lying around. The most interesting part was the use of compost toilets. I know that the compost is used on the property for something, and I am just hoping that it wasn't the veggies we ate the entire time!

The quilt is done. Still hate the invisible thread :( Here are some sneak preview shots of the quilt and it is going in the mail tomorrow.

Met My Goal!!!

WooHoo! I had a goal of getting 100 caches before June 21 (the longest day of sunshine in the year). I just met it with 55 minutes to spare :-)

It is strange to think that after tomorrow we start losing daylight - it is all the more precious up here in the north where the winters are so dark. This summer it still hasn't gotten up past 60 more than a handful of days. So...I KNOW my summer travels will be taking me to warmer weather and now I am looking forward to it and also know that I will probably complain about it while I am there:)

So besides that I have been busy getting paperwork done today to get my certification for admin. mailed in:) Soon I will be "official" in the eyes of the state - now if only I get could a job...

Well, it is late and I gotta get some sleep
